Description

An Italian-influenced monument in the Jardin du Luxembourg

The Medici Fountain is a fine example of how the Italians influenced Paris in the 17th Century. This beautiful fountain is located in the Jardin du Luxembourg and was built in 1630 for Marie de’Medici, the widow of Kind Henry IV of France. It was designed by a community of Florence artists.

In the 19th Century the Medici Fountain underwent a series of modifications. First of all, after Marie de’Medici’s death, it passed through the hands of several owners. Parts of the fountain had disappeared in the 18th Century, and some of it had even begun to crumble due to lack of maintenance. Under Napoleon’s orders, it was reconstructed to where its original appearance and even location had changed radically.
