Description

Lamarck – Caulaincourt is a Métro station on line 12 on the slopes of Montmartre, and one of the most photographed in Paris: its single entrance sits between two staircases that climb the hill around it.

The entrance is the thing to see: a classic Métro doorway flanked by two flights of steps climbing the hill, where Rue de la Fontaine du But turns into a stairway. The platforms lie 25 meters below, reached by lift or by a spiral staircase.

Film fans know it from Amélie: this is the station with the double staircase where Amélie leads a blind man, describing the market of Rue Lamarck as they go.

The station opened in 1912 under the name Lamarck. Its two names honor the naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Armand de Caulaincourt, a general and foreign minister under Napoleon.
