Description

Originally a royal palace in the 14th century, the Conciergerie later served as a prison. During the Reign of Terror (1793–94), it was a place of incarceration for people accused of being enemies of the Revolution, who were then brought before the Revolutionary Tribunal located in the Palais de Justice, a 13th-century building. Notable exhibitions have been held in the Salle des Gens d’Armes, a stunning Rayonnant Gothic hall and the largest surviving medieval hall in all of Europe.
