Description

Former school for training officers of the Royal Army

The École Militaire was proposed to be built in 1750 by Louis XV. Construction began in 1752, and it opened in 1760. It was originally the school for training officers of the Royal Army, and due to its simplicity of structure, it is a fine example of neo-classicism architecture.

In 1777 the Ecole Militaire was reorganized and renamed the Ecole de Cadets-gentilshommes or the School of Young Gentlemen. One of their most famed graduates was Napoleon Bonaparte who excelled beyond anyone’s imagination and graduated in one year instead of two. His superiors were known to have said that, “in certain circumstances, he might go far.”
